| Op Trad.It! staat een mix van jonge groepen en ‘oudgedienden’, zoals dit Italiaanse gezelschap uit de streek Veneto in Noord-Italië. Net als bij veel andere Italiaanse bands en muzikanten (Ciapa Rusa, Maurizio Martinotti, Riccardo Tesi) ligt ook bij Calicanto veldonderzoek naar traditionele muziek uit de eigen regio ten grondslag aan het repertoire. Langzaam werd de groep een belangrijk onderdeel van de Italiaanse folkrevival. |

Ze toerden door Europa en brachten een aantal fraaie cds’, uit met veel liefdevolle aandacht voor de tradities van Veneto.

| The band started off in1981 with playing the traditional music of the northern region of Veneto. Calicanto founder Roberto Tombesi also began the recovery of local musical instruments, such as the piva ,an ancient veneto-emilian bagpipe. The first LP was published in 1983. The unusual musical style of the band and the encouraging reactions of the critics made Calicanto one of the most important band in the italian folk-revival. Tours in Belgium, Spain, Switzerland and Yugoslavia and performances at major festivals made Calicanto famous all around Europe. In 1997 Calicanto joins recording label Compagnia Nuove Indye which produced the CD Venexia, that moved enthusiasm on public and critics. |

A poll by magazine Folk Bulletin pointed out that Venexia was one of the five best cds of the year. Calicanto starts again researching in the italian communities of Istria and Dalmazia and, celebrating 20 years of activity, the project Labirintomare is defined and brings 25 artists to collaborate and work together at the CD. Labirintomare brings Calicanto in 2002 to various festivals and events, the most important of which, the Smithsonian Folklife Festival held in Washington D.C. was directed by the great cello player Yo-Yo Ma. Recently Calicanto was involved in many projects with Carlo Muratori Trio, Jan Mari Carlotti, the Monks of Praglia's Abbey, Dominique Paris and the Grande Orchestra delle Alpi. |
